Atlanta, GA, September 1, 2006 -- Micron Optics announces the release of its new line of sm130 Optical Sensor Interrogators. These compact and versatile modules meet the growing demand for fast interrogation of fiber optic sensors in harsh environments. The sm130 can interrogate simultaneously hundreds of sensors on up to 4 fibers at 1 kHz, and with the sm041-416 channel expansion unit, the sensor count can be quadrupled. The result is a single system that can measure both dynamic and static phenomena for large complex structures. Strain measurements are the most common with the sm130, but the system is equally capable of measuring acceleration, pressure, and temperature. Fiber-optic sensors have distinct advantages over electronic sensors where electromagnetic noise or corrosive substances are present. They also can make measurements 50 km or more away from the sm130 instrument. These characteristics offer a proven and reliable solution for measurement needs in oil wells, offshore oil platforms, oil and gas pipelines as well as long term structural health monitoring of large buildings, bridges, dams and tunnels.
